A woman with three kids made headlines when she posed in front of a Christmas tree surrounded by a tower of presents.

Emma Tapping (37), a single parent from the UK, forked out £2 000 (about R36 000) on gifts for her daughters and son, according to The Sun.

Her spending habits already caused a social media storm in 2015 when it emerged she’d spent £1 500 (about R27 000) on hundreds of gifts for her kids.

This year the business owner is back at it again, the pile adding up to more than 300 gifts.

According to Mirror, Emma bought her children 100 presents each.

In an image circulating on social media, the massive pile of presents almost totally obscures the Christmas tree. Only its top branches can be seen.

Appearing on ITV's This Morning today, Emma defended her copious gifts, saying: "I work hard for my money."

"I start in January, shop all the way through the year, and that's the pile at the end of the year," she said, pointing back at her Christmas tree.

"I wouldn't change it for the world."

Emma’s response left some Twitter users outraged.

One woman commented: "This is obscene. While other children go hungry and people are homeless, why not donate?"

Another viewer said: "Could have saved a few quid and not bothered with the tree, can hardly see it."

But Emma was also defended by some Twitter users, one saying: "Her money, her choice! Why should anyone justify what they spend on their own families."

Another added: "It's her life."
