-
Swaddling – Wrapping your baby firmly, but not too tightly. Ask the nurses at the hospital to show you this technique. All those receiving blankets you got as gifts will come in handy to make your baby feel protected and secure.
-
Side position – Lay your baby on his side with wedges to stop him from rolling.
-
Shushing – Distract and calm your baby with loud, continuous white noise like the dryer or vacuum cleaner. You can also buy a CD of whale sounds or white noise.
-
Swinging - Rhythmic movement, such as swaying from foot to foot, or the movement of a rocking chair will help to gradually soothe the baby to sleep.
-
Sucking – A dummy can be very useful, especially in the first few months, to calm and relax a cranky baby.
