Three words I wasn’t ready to say: my son’s moustache.
Yet there it was: bristly, brownish blonde and determined.
I remember...
... the pursing of that little mouth into a contented pout when he was full of milk and ready to sleep.
... the glimmer of pearl in his gum when his first tooth came in.
... the way he howled through his first haircut, and looked so surprisingly grown-up afterwards.
... his uneven gummy smile when the first baby tooth fell out.
... the way he sang with unexpected emotion at his last primary school assembly, his hair combed into a neat parting.
My son’s moustache: his dad taught him to shave it, and we all gathered around to watch. Three strokes of the razor and it was gone. Maybe it’s not so determined after all.
