'So, which one's yours?'
It's the first drizzly Saturday of the junior soccer season, and we don't know all our team-mates yet.
'Mine's the blondish one who’s always tying his shoelaces,' I confess. 'Which one's yours?'
The man I am talking to sells orthopaedic cushions, the tall guy is a gynae, and the lady in the red puffy jacket works at a fish and chip shop.
We never run out of things to say to each other. There are always the kids to discuss: how quickly they outgrow their boots, whether they know which way they’re supposed to be running, and what they will and won't eat.
When we're in kid world like the soccer field I can always start a conversation with 'I have two children. How many do you have?'
Because if you do have children, we have at least a little common ground.
