Last night I lie awake listening to my 9-month-old cough like an old smoker, I imagined the worst case scenario. The words whooping cough floated up in my mind. You always have the worst thoughts in the dead of night, don't you?

Listening to a sick child wheeze during the night and wake himself up periodically is not fun. Not for the worrying parents and especially not for the sick child. My first instinct was to rush him to the emergency room but my husband, the more rational of the two of us, convinced me that it was not that dire and that we could take him to the doctor in the morning.

With winter here (Thanks Ned Stark!), it's brought it's best friends, cold and flu. Children are coughing all over the place, little noses are dripping with snot and fevers are raging.
