Did you know that over 570 children are killed in pedestrian accidents in South Africa every year? And another 250 die because they weren’t buckled in. Over 325 drown and almost 230 die from burns. In total, an overwhelming 6 500 children die due to injury in South Africa every year. An even bigger tragedy is that most of these deaths are preventable.

We all want the best for our children, and so does Woolworths. Did you know that the retailer partners with Childsafe, a campaign run by the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Southern Africa (CAPFSA), and is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide? It helps to reduce injuries to children through research, education, environmental change and makes recommendations for legislation. Woolworths supports this initiative wholeheartedly and recently opened a dedicated research and educational centre at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town.

The Woolworths Childsafe Research and Educational Centre offers education and skills training programmes to patients' families and the general public on child safety. It will also conduct research and provide input into child safety legislation, standards regarding children's products and creating safer environments. The centre hosts a safety demonstration house that models existing set-ups in lower income households where parents and caregivers can learn how to best assemble their home (particularly the kitchen, bathroom and living room areas) to prevent and reduce child accidents and injuries.

Let’s see the world through our kids’ eyes.
