Real moms share their frightening birth stories with us.
The anticipation of birth and the pain we all know accompanies it is a nightmare in and of itself but unfortunately it can be a lot worse than what we imagined. We asked our Facebook community
if they had any crazy or scary birth stories to tell us. These 5 moms share with us.Pregnant for 42 weeksBy Kath
My son was born in the UK where the maternity units are midwife run, so obstetricians only appear for problems. I was allowed to carry him to 42 weeks, in spite of being in pain as he was a 4kg baby. At 42 weeks I was induced but the midwives had not realised that he lay transverse (sideways) so was not engaged and was not going to engage. 14 hours later, his heart rate dropped and then an OBGYN was called in. At this point it was discovered that baby's cord was prolapsed (coming out first) and I was rushed into theater, given a general anesthetic and he was born by emergency C-section.
I was very lucky that he is OK and did not suffer the brain damage that so often goes with this problem. But his blood sugar was low so he was kept in Neonatal ICU for two days and I did not even get to see him until 12 hours after his birth. Six years later I have been brave enough to have another child and this time I had her here in SA. What a difference. Everything was calm, I was monitored and the doctor picked up that she was laying the same way well in advance so the c-section was planned, I was awake and the whole birth process was lovely.
A broken placenta
The scary experience of doctors telling me that my placenta broke after my baby came out. They had to use doctor's tools (I don't know which ones exactly) to remove it bit by bit. All I felt was excruciating pain. I couldn't stop screaming.Birth is frighteningBy Vanashri
I was fine when we went into the theater. I thought I could do it. Then the screams for epidural and before I knew it, I caught a glimpse of my smiling daughter and they knocked me out.
For my son I had baby blues. Being a parent is tough but I love them to bits.Giving birth aloneBy Louisa
For my first child I was alone at home and gave birth in the bathroom by myself. 5 minutes later an ambulance arrived and gave me gas and air because they felt I deserved it! Second child, Hubs raced me to the hospital as it was the quickest option. We got there just in time for the birth, but not in time for any pain relief! Even though I shouted for it...Early or late?By Chantelle
Near the end of my pregnancy, I kept telling my husband that I just 'knew' that our baby was going to arrive early. I had a C-section planned but true to what I said, our little man arrived nearly 3weeks premature. This is what had me confused though - he was born with the dry, scaly skin that I thought only overdue babies had. Just before he was 3 weeks old he was admitted to hospital with suspected blood septicemia. We never found out what caused it, but one doctor said that it could have come from when he was still in the womb. I often wonder if he was not perhaps an overdue baby and that is why we had those problems weeks later.
