"I gave birth in my dad's car"

accreditation

"We had a "family birth" in a car.

This was my second birth, and yes, it was much quicker this time round.

It all started on Wednesday, 2 January. That morning I had the urge to clean house and do washing, that's when you know baby is ready to come – it's an old saying.

All day, I had light pain in-between long periods and just continued with my day.

My husband came home and we had an ordinary evening, relaxing by the TV, just the 3 of us – myself, my husband and our son.

Labour pains

I decided to have a warm bath, as the pain became slightly stronger.

My husband then came to check on me, he looked down under and said: "No, I think it's time to go to hospital."

From there on, it's like our baby heard him and decided to let the pain begin. It knocked me hard.

We called my dad, as he was going to take us to the hospital.

All I did from there on, was lie on my bed while our baby was getting ready to come into the world.

Our son was looking all anxious as his dad dressed him. My husband then got all the bags ready to leave.

I did not realise my water had broken already, it must have happened in the bath.

My father arrived, we all got into the car – my son and I are on the backseat.

I then started screaming as the baby was seriously planning her arrival that moment.

We saw Metro cops on the side of the road.

My father got out and asked them to escort us to the hospital.

"This baby is coming!"

In all my screaming and pain, all I saw were blue lights and red robots.

My husband, from the front seat, checked on me and told me: "This baby is coming!"

I refused to let her out and kept her in, but he insisted "you have to push"!

With my brave son right next to me, I pushed and my (not qualified, but by natural instinct) husband delivered our beautiful daughter at 23h00.

We were around the corner from the hospital and she was not crying.

My husband knew just what to do – he took the phlegm out of her mouth and turned her upside down, giving her a light spank (like in the movies), and she cried.

He wrapped her in a towel, which my father insisted we take along when we left home and of course it came in handy.

We arrived at the hospital, the emergency team put me on a stretcher and I kept my baby in my arms. I was slowly fading out.

The nurses made sure baby and I were cleaned and checked.

All was well and this is why we've called it a "family birth". My son was right there to see his sister being born and up until today, still remembers it.

Thank you to my brave boys, we survived a beautiful birth story!"
