I have pains and cramps. Is there anything I can do?
I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have pains and cramps. Is there anything I can do?
Tina Otte, midwife and childbirth educator, answers:
Vaginal infections are common in pregnancy due to all the hormonal changes in the body. It is also normal at your stage of pregnancy to have more than normal vaginal discharge. If treated correctly, an infection should not harm your baby, but you do need to establish if this is indeed an infection. Mention to the doctor that you still have a problem and let them take a swab and get it tested so that you can be treated accordingly. Often your caregiver will know if you have an infection just by the look and smell of the discharge of magnesium. Soaking in a warm bath before bedtime and adding a quarter of a teaspoon of arnica oil to your bath may prevent an attack.
