Every pregnancy website or app has a checklist, a list of things to mark off as your pregnancy progresses. Choose a gynae, start a pregnancy blog, have your first prenatal checkup, buy a cot etc. The obvious things.
Being four months along with my first baby there have been a whole bunch of other things that when they happen I think, “Aaah, there it is.” Here are my top 5 things that have annoyed me about pregnancy.1. My jeans won’t close
For most of my first trimester I still wore my non-pregnancy clothes. Until the day I tried to wear my skinny jeans (normal jeans just don’t fit into rider boots okay!) – anyway, the button wouldn’t close. Well it could, but then I wouldn’t be able to actually breathe. So it’s really a moment when you realise that you need to buy clothes to fit your beautifully expanding body
and then head down to the shops and they either don’t have a maternity section at all or they have an awful selection.
Trying to find maternity clothes that aren’t ridiculously expensive or utterly boring is a nightmare!
2. “That’s a terrible name”
I made the slip-up of telling some people the names we’ve chosen for our child. Big mistake. I’ve heard it said that you shouldn’t tell people the names you’ve chosen because once he has his name they can’t tell you that it’s a terrible/boring/ordinary/weird name. My response because it was people who were close to me, was that they could just shut up and choose their own child’s name
one day.3. “You’re carrying quite big!”
I went to a bridal shower on Saturday and the conversation went a little something like this:
“How far along are you?”
“Oh, wow! You’re carrying big hey?”
Well, yes. I’m growing a human. Thanks for making me feel fatter than I already do. And that’s the problem isn’t it? Society makes pregnant women feel ashamed that they pick up weight when they’re pregnant. That they’re fat, ugly whales like this week’s You Magazine thinks of poor Kim Kardashian
. Let the woman grow her child in peace. And me too for that matter!4. “Don’t have a c-section, home births are the best!”
Then there’s your birth choice. You’re having an elective c-section? “Don’t! You’ll be drugged forever and won’t be able to bond with your baby afterwards”, says the mom who’s given birth naturally. You’re having an epidural in the hospital? “Don’t! They can go horribly wrong”, says the mom who gave natural birth at home.
People always tend to have such strong opinions on things they haven’t experienced. So while it’s nice to get information on the different birthing options and what each one is like, get them from someone who has actually experienced them. Talk to your doctor or midwife but make the decision yourself. Not based on the scare tactics of others.5. The sneeze pee
Last week while lazing on the couch I sneezed; and then peed at the same time. Yup, these things happen. It was all the more surprising because I didn’t even have to pee in the first place. Kegel exercises
