New parents often complain about the hidden costs of giving birth, but this US couple managed to find one that is quite unusual: a traffic fine for speeding after cops caught them in the middle of their dash to hospital to have their baby, according to Huffington Post.

Fast family

The expectant mom knew she was going into labour and called 911 to alert authorities as she jumped into the car with her husband. Unfortunately, her screams meant that the dispatchers couldn’t understand what she was saying. She begged her husband to drive as fast as he could as she was concerned that she’d give birth in the vehicle, and that’s when the cops spotted them speeding.

A high-speed chase ended when another cop car placed spikes on the road, causing the couple’s car to stop. The “criminal” couple were told to exit the car at gunpoint, but the police then realised the situation.

They escorted the couple to hospital where they gave birth an hour later. The speeding new dad is now waiting for his traffic fine…

Financial planning for parents-to-be

There can be many unexpected costs to giving birth. If there are complications and an emergency C-section is necessary, without medical aid this can be extremely expensive.

It’s a good idea, as part of your birth plan, to do some research about what to expect when it comes to financial planning for having a family. Ask your friends and doctors what the possible costs involved may be and contact your medical aid for details of expenses covered. If there’s a shortfall, you may still have time to prepare yourselves for the big day.

Have you factored financial planning into your birth plan?
