How's the foetus during week 30?

Your baby is about 39.9cm long and weighs about 1,3kg- as much as a cabbage.

  • The lanugo (fine hair on the baby's skin) is disappearing.
  • Your baby can open and close her eyelids.
  • In girls the clitoris is quite prominent because it isn't covered by the labia yet.

You may be concerned about having sex at this late stage of your pregnancy, and lying flat on your back is not an option, so you have to get creative with positions. 

Sleeping becomes more and more uncomfortable as your belly expands.
You may be feeling your baby's hiccups.

Be sure to eat enough foods containing calcium. Your baby is demanding more and more calcium as his bones grow and harden.

Your baby has doubled in height over the past six weeks, and from now until delivery, she won't grow that much longer. The focus is now on her putting on fat and gaining weight.

How your baby's growing:

This may be the last week that your little one can turn a somersault, he's grown so big and there is less amniotic fluid.

Fat has built up under his skin, his eyes are open and he can now see and focus – his eyes can move from side to side, following a light source. His head and body are more balanced in size and he is looking more and more like a newborn baby. The lanugo – the downy hair that covers his body - is beginning to disappear.

You may be having quite vivid dreams lately as your subconscious wrestles with the idea of becoming a mother and your baby's impending arrival.

Tip of the week

As always, the best way of making sure you're getting all your minerals and vitamins is to have a healthy and varied diet. The word for this week is iron. You need it to help replenish your red blood cell supply and provide your baby with sufficient iron stores for the months after birth. Aim to take in at least 30 milligrams per day.

The following are excellent food sources: pumpkin seeds, parsley, almonds, dried prunes, cashews, raisins, Brazil nuts, walnuts, dates, pork, cooked dried beans, sesame seeds and pecans. Keep in mind that vitamin-C helps increase iron absorption, so you might want to eat your nuts with a glass of orange juice.
