Glass of wine for your baby?

Melodie de Jager answers this mom's question on how to recognise Foetal Alcohol Syndrome:

We suspect a child has FAS, can you give me some tips hoe to recognise it and how we can help this poor child?

From a Mind Moves perspective I would recommend the following Mind Moves will help the child to feel safe and improve memory. Start by asking him to turn his back towards you and use your hands to firmly trace the outline of his body from head to toe – repeat 3 times (Mind Moves book page 53). While his back is still towards you ask him to throw his arms wide open and breath in, then breathe out while he gives himself a hug – you hug him from behind - repeat 3 times (Mind Moves book page 55).

Such a child would also strongly benefit from having his/her basic needs (warmth, food, touch) met, routine and consistency. Encourage lots of gross motor development and be prepared to repeat every bit of information a few times before the child will file the information in memory. For more information on how to approach a child who is functioning from a survival brain, kindly refer to pages 16 – 20 in Mind Moves book.
