Every weekday, some 1.2 million people in the Western Cape wake up with Ryan O’Connor. He sees them through their breakfast, guides them through the traffic and then waves goodbye to them as they start their working day.

Ryan is the Breakfast Show radio presenter on 94.5KFM. Listening to him is addictive. He’s consistently upbeat and his down-to-earth style makes it feel as if you’re spending the morning with a friend.

It was because of this that so many of his listeners were as thrilled as he was when he announced his wife’s pregnancy late last year.

Not content with just the announcement, I hunted him down to get the low-down on just how the pregnancy is going:

How did Karen tell you she was pregnant and how did you react?

We've been trying for a long time and been disappointed a few times so this time we just took it with caution and waited till we passed the safety period. I am overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a dad soon! It's an exciting time.

Have you always wanted to be a father or is this an idea you grew into?

I always wanted to be a dad. No question there.

When is she due?

Mid-April 2013

Are you hoping for a boy or a girl?

I was hoping for a girl and that’s exactly what we're having.

How has the pregnancy been going so far?

Karen is looking amazing and bar a little bit of hormones she's been fantastic during the pregnancy so far. There's been no need for mid-night dashes to the shops for chocolate or anything else strange so I've been lucky. I have also learnt a lot about prams and baby gear/wear over the past few months.

How involved are you in the pregnancy? Do you go to the scans? Will you go to pre-natal classes?

I wouldn't miss a scan or pre-natal class for anything. I'm very involved and I think all dads should be.

Home or hospital birth?

Hospital and hopefully natural, if all goes according to plan.

Inside or outside the delivery room?

I will be there with camera in hand a huge smile on my face!

Will your baby have a celebrity name like “Apple” or “Rain”?

Hahaha! No it will be something a little less extravagant than that for sure. Having said that it is a tough one finding the right one!

Government, private or homeschool?

Next to choosing this is another tough question. At this stage it would be nice to stay local and let our kids attend a government school in the area we live in, as we're fortunate to have a few good ones. But I think we'll examine this question a lot closer at a later stage.

What are your thoughts on discipline? Are you a big softie, or will you play The Enforcer?

I was brought up in a home with a healthy balance but it's in my nature to be disciplined and a disciplinarian. So I'd like to say yes I'll be the enforcer but I think that will change when she arrives and melts my heart away forever!

Thanks for sharing, Ryan! We’re eagerly awaiting the announcement that the littlest O’Connor has arrived.

*Editor's note, April 2013: Tragically, Ryan and Karen lost their baby girl Grace O'Connor. We offer them our deepest condolences.
