A woman has been arrested in Colombia after she was caught at the airport allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine in a fake pregnancy bump made out of latex, according to AZN.

Video footage released by police shows how the cleverly created baby bump could be unstrapped and also revealed two kilograms of cocaine the woman had concealed. The cops had made the find after searching the woman and finding her “pregnancy” was cold to the touch.

Why a baby bump?

It could be that smugglers had relied on the universal respect society has for pregnant women, hoping that she would be treated differently to someone who isn’t pregnant. Many law enforcement agencies are encouraged to be less physical when it comes to treating pregnant women in order to avoid injuring an unborn infant.

Another reason for the fake bump may simply be that it provided a handy cavity in which to conceal narcotics.

Either way, the woman’s future is most likely to be playing out in a prison cell rather than a nursery.

Note: Flying while pregnant is generally considered safe in the first and second trimester, but some airlines will not allow a woman to fly in late pregnancy closer due date, as the risk of premature labour may put mother and baby in danger.

The dead baby as drug mule myth

The case of the strange smuggling is reminiscent of the story of the drug smugglers who supposedly used the embalmed body of a dead baby in which to smuggle drugs. The tale of the hollowed out corpse used for drug smuggling may or may not be an urban legend, as it has been told many times in sources all over the internet, yet without a credible primary source.

Do you think pregnant women should be treated differently?
