If you’re pregnant, and you need to eat NOW, don’t forget to pay for the food- that’s the lesson a 30-weeks pregnant mom learned recently.

She and her partner each ate a chicken sandwich while shopping, and forgot to pay. They were arrested, and subsequently lost custody of their toddler.
According to CNN, Nicole Leszczynski, 28, who is also 30 weeks pregnant, and her husband Marcin, 33, were shopping last week at a Honolulu Safeway with their two-year-old-daughter and paid for all of the groceries in their cart (about R400 worth of items) with the exception of an eaten and forgotten sandwich.
Nicole claims she got the sandwich early in the shopping at Safeway, munched on it to help relieve some dizziness, then put the wrapper back in the cart to have it scanned so she could pay for it, but forgot it was there as they checked out.
Since they had no friends locally, their daughter was taken away from them until they could pay bail, a total of eighteen hours.
That’s a fairly steep price to pay for a combination of pregnancy porridge-brain and the need to feed. Moms of toddlers are also sleep deprived, and quick to forget things.
"We didn’t know where our daughter was, didn't know what the situation was, she didn’t have any clothes. They just took her right from the grocery store.", Lesczynski said.
She adds that it's "still hard to believe this happened."
The couple are now looking for criminal defense lawyers, while Safeway is trying to escape criticism of its heavy-handed treatment of the sandwich bandits:
"It appears we may not have handled this matter in the best possible way and we are taking the situation seriously,” their official statement said.
The total cost of the sandwiches? R80.
