A European ruling could see the parents being barred from knowing the sex of their unborn child- a move which has the intention of preventing ‘selective abortions’ based on gender, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Parenting groups are angrily dismissing the ruling, saying that parents want to know for practical reasons, too, such as whether siblings would be able to share a room, what colour a nursery should be painted or to share the news with the siblings themselves. They say that they don’t often come across ‘Victoria Beckham syndrome’, in which parents are desperate to have a boy after having several girls or vice versa.
Some hospitals already have a policy in place not to reveal the sex of the baby, citing scanning costs and the possibility that they may be sued if they are incorrect as the basis for the policy. They say that scans and tests are done to check for abnormalities and date the foetus.
