Most parents worry about the right time to potty train their little ones. Every child is different, so no specific age can be said to be the right time. As a parent you need to look out for the signs that indicate your child is physically and mentally ready for this big step. Most parents get ahead of themselves and they think their child is ready.

If you're not careful you can put too much pressure on your toddler, which may make the whole potty training process long and painful for all of you.

1. SHE STAYS DRY

Before she reaches the age of 20 months, your toddler's bladder empties itself frequently, so it's hard for her to control it. If she is able to stay dry for an hour or two and wakes up dry most mornings, she may be ready to be potty trained.

You can start potty training if her bowel movements come at specific times every day and she is aware of the urge to go to the loo. At this stage she might not be able to tell you that she needs to go, but she might pull a certain face, sit in a certain position or make grunting noises. This means she is aware of the functioning of her body.

2. SHE KNOWS POTTY WORDS

When she understands or is able to tell the difference between wet and dry, clean and dirty or up and down, is able to follow simple instructions such as go or bring and is able to communicate her need to you in whatever way, she could be ready.

3. SHE'S CURIOUS ABOUT BATHROOM HABITS

She follows you or her older siblings to the bathroom, watches what you do and then tries to imitate. This is an indication that you can start potty training your toddler.
