Many dads would be uncomfortable with their 5-year-old sons dressing in dresses, but this awesome German father has decided that if he’s committed to supporting his son, he’ll follow through with that commitment, by putting on a skirt of his own, according to Huffington Post.

Skirts, dresses and nail polish

Dad Nils Pickert says that his son’s unusual choices of clothing, including dresses and skirts, get a lot of attention in the small town where they live, so, in solidarity with the boy, Pickert wears skirts and nail polish, and then the unlikely pair are happy to take a walk through the town together.

Pickert wrote:

“Yes, I’m one of those dads that try to raise their children equal. I’m not one of those academic daddies that ramble about gender equality during their studies and then, as soon as a child’s in the house, still relapse into those fluffy gender roles... I know that by now, part of the minority that makes a fool of themselves from time to time. Out of conviction” (sic).

In an interview with Emma magazine, he says he chose to “become the role model he knew his son needed”.

Pictures of the pair have since been provoking loads of debate across the internet about gender stereotypes, and many sites have called him 'father of the year' for his effforts. For Pickert, it’s really just about accepting his son and enjoying time together with him.

Do you think this dad is helping his son by wearing a skirt?
