Newly-revamped Protea Fire & Ice hotel in the heart of Cape Town’s city centre is an ideal venue for a mini-escape for tired cosmopolitan parents.

You could take your kids along if you like, but it’s really a fab place for you if you’re lucky enough to have a babysitter who can stay overnight while you get to treat yourself.

The staff are super-friendly and the restaurant is a wonderful place to relax while you check out the city lights sparkling below you. One of the best views of Table Mountain is available from many of the rooms and it’s a three minute stroll down to Long Street’s bustling night life. You could ask the hotel to help organise a cab if you don’t feel like walking or if you want to do a quick dash to the V&A Waterfront.

The rooms are spacious enough to feel like you can stretch out on the comfortable bed and the bathrooms are clean and sparkling. Our room had a balcony with chairs where we shared a bottle of bubbly as the sun came up (yup, it was a decadent sort of evening!).

If you would like a chance to cool off, you can have a dip in the pool. Occasionally there are music events, too, so you may even get to enjoy some of Cape Town’s home-grown talent while sipping on one of the bar’s legendary milkshakes.

One of the best parts of any hotel stay is a decent breakfast, and we enjoyed a perfect buffet-style feast which covered almost any food group we could have desired. Of course, after the delicious dinner we’d had the night before, we were bursting at the seams after breakfast. The menu has some classic meals with a South African feel and loads of fresh veggies, herbs and spices.

Before your time at the Protea Fire & Ice draws to an end, it’s worth having a cocktail at the unparalleled main bar which is loaded the entire length with ice blocks to keep your cocktails cool and glistening.

The hotel can even cope with parties, events and conferences, so you can use the excuse that you’re checking it out for work purposes while you relax.
