I was heartened to happen upon a story of real fatherly love, real bravery and a real example of what all men; especially fathers should be aspiring to. Adolf Piater left Mossel Bay Yacht Club at 08:00 on Saturday 24 April en route to Cape Town harbour…in a rubber dingy, powered by an electrical motor.

And apparently this has never been done before. Adolf Piater, and co-pilot Justin McCarthy have attempted this very risky journey to raise funds for his 4-year-old daughter Carly’s eye operation and to raise awareness for ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurety).

I’m always quietly amused by some of the inane comments on my columns from people who are obviously not parents. I can only assume that the reason they feel compelled to visit parenting websites and make their idiotic comments is because they’re thinking about becoming parents one day.

And here, in this story of Adolf and his lovely daughter, is the true essence of parenting. Because if you are willing to put your life on the line to ensure the survival of your offspring, then you’ll probably make a damned good parent, if not, use a condom for all of our sakes. Parenting really is not for everyone, and the thousands of failed parent-child relationships bear testimony to it. But if you’ve ever wondered if you’ve got what it takes, take a leaf out of Adolf’s book.

The almost 640km journey has all kinds of perilous possibilities in store. There’s the Cape’s notorious coast line which has climbed many a bigger ship wreck. The sea can be very unforgiving, and if your vessel is capsized, you could come face to face with a Great White Shark. But what a way to go, hey? I am not so sure I could do it. I mean I would choose another way to raise the money.

Another camera team will be filming the road trip with Joani (his wife) and his two daughters. Let’s hope the story has a happy ending for all involved.

With the media invariably focussing on the scary bits of life and parenting in general, we could all do with the story of a brave dad willing to risk life and limb so that his little girl can see.
