Zombie parents, zombie kids

According to an American study, parents are not concerned about the amount of time their kids spend online, watching TV or playing with electronic gadgets. The study claims that “that media use is not a source of conflict in the home”, says USA Today.

The study divided families up into three categories:
  • "Media-centric families (39%) in which parents used electronic media for an average of 11 hours a day and children averaged 4.5 hours. These families were most likely to leave TVs on most of the time (48%) and put TVs in children's rooms (44%).
  • Media-moderate families (45%), in which parents used media nearly five hours a day and children were plugged in for nearly three hours.
  • Media-light families (16%), in which parents averaged less than two hours and children averaged about 1.5 hours of screen time each day." (USA Today).

Zombificaton!

Gawker took a more critical look at the results of the study, suggesting that parents are so absorbed in their own use of screens for social media or just chilling that they have become detached from noticing or even caring what their kids are up to. They referred to this phenomenon as “computer zombie parents unconcerned about computer zombie kids”.

It’s noted that children will take their lead from their parents in terms of how much time they spend in any activity- if you’re busy “liking” on Facebook or ReTweeting rather than spending time playing with or reading to your kids, you too could risk turning them into tech zombies. But you may not notice, unless the charger cables to your laptop and cell phone break…
