Smurf porn dad escapes charges

No charges for dad who accidentally played porn instead of “Smurfs” to kids.

In the news: A father who rented a copy of The Smurf movie for his kid’s birthday party, but inadvertently pressed “play”, showing the shocked children porn has escaped being charged.

The father had initially complained that the DVD had been tampered with, involving the authorities, according to AP. Subsequent checks prompted the conclusion that the DVD was fine, and that the porn was in all likelihood already on the laptop he was using.

The surprise porn show was said to be an accident, and the dad managed to avoid being charged.

Did you know:

Showing porn to a child under 18 constitutes a prosecutable sexual offence in terms of section 19 of the Sexual Offences Amendment Act of 2007.

While consenting adults are obviously free to access porn, clearly children should not be able to stumble on dad (or mom)’s stash.

Tips for preventing kids accessing their parent’s adult entertainment material:

  • Don’t share your computer or tablet with your kids if you have been using it to view porn
  • Do lock any DVDs or printed pornographic material away in a safe place
  • Don’t view it in a place where any children are likely to walk into the room
  • Don’t keep it in the house!
Remember: As a parent, your primary responsibility is to the emotional and physical well-being of your child.

What do you think was Smurf/porn dad’s biggest mistake?
