What we thought about it
Growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe, Will has her horse, her pet monkey and her friends. Days are spent riding wildly in the hills, picking fruit and eating it still warm from the sun, and basking in the love of her father. But when her father dies, Will is sent to boarding school in England, where the sky is grey and the cold sinks into her bones.
This wonderful, engaging adventure is sure to appeal to tween and young teen girls, who will empathise with Will's futile attempts to be invisible to the scrutiny of the unwelcoming, prim girls in her school. Her eventual willingness to face the changes in her life show that friendship can be found anywhere - from the veld of Africa to the towering spires of an English boarding school. This debut novel by Katherine Rundell draws on her own youth in Africa, with simple, yet descriptive writing that even reluctant readers won't find too challenging.
