SA searches for sick boy's bunny
Social media takes on the search for a sick child's favourite soft toy.
tweeted his plea for help this morning, I doubt he knew just how many people around the country would be searching for a toy bunny rabbit.
The above pictured beige bunny named Rabbit ("because 'Bunny' is a baby word") has belonged to 9-year-old Nic since the day he was born. It's been his constant companion. Unfortunately Nic is a very sick little boy and needs to undergo Radiated Iodine therapy and this means being in isolation for 3 days. His only companion will be Rabbit who will need to be incinerated afterwards.
Nic is a strong boy but as his mother told @6000
, "I am amazed at the courage of my child. He has taken everything – everything – in his stride, but the thought of losing his rabbit has been the only thing that has rocked him."
Social media steps in
This is why Twitter and Facebook have taken up the challenge to find an identical mate to this toy bunny that was purchased at Woolworths 10 years ago. And, boy, have they been searching!
The link to @6000's blog post
has been tweeted hundreds of times. It has been retweeted even more. The hashtag, #rabbit4nic, is trending in South Africa and the story is spreading like wild fire on Facebook.
It's heartwarming to see the responses and pleas from those who have never met @6000 or Nic!
Local companies and celebrities like the 567 CapeTalk
, Lee-Ann Liebenberg
and so many more have stepped in to spread the word to their Twitter followers and Facebook fans.
It's amazing to see how a stuffed toy and hope for a little boy have brought a (social media) nation together.Update - "We found a bunny!" or a few
