Don't tell the kids about homosexuality

accreditation
In the modern world where freedom to be homosexual in many countries is a normal occurrence, Russia seems to have take a step back into the past.

Russia's lower house of parliament has passed a shocking new law that will fine anyone who gives information about homosexuality to children under 18 years of age. The bill will only officially be passed once the upper house of parliament and President Vladimir Putin approve it, but according to BBC News, that's just a formality.

This law is even more shocking as Russia officially legalised homosexuality in 1993. Sadly, half of the country still thinks that homosexuals do not deserve the same rights as heterosexuals.

The rules

Yelena Mizulina, the bill's co-author, says that this bill was set in place to "protect Russian children from information that rejects traditional family values."

The bill also "prohibits the spreading of information aimed at forming nontraditional sexual attitudes among children," Mizulina said. "Secondly, the bill prohibits the imposition of information about nontraditional sexual relations that may cause interest among children."

That means if your teenage son or daughter asks for advice and information because they think they may be gay, you could be fined up to 5000 Russian Rubles if you're caught giving them information. That's approximately R1500.

If you're an official the fine could be ten times as much. And if you're a business, media organisation or school, the fine could be up to 1 million rubles (or more than R300 000).
