April Fools’ Day, for parents

Traditionally a day of pranks, the 1st of April is often a day for fun family time, too. After you’ve scoured the news headlines for suspiciously bizarre stories, you’ll probably settle down with a cup of coffee. Wait... You remember the slight smirk on your son’s face as he handed the cup to you, and now there’s giggling coming from behind the curtain...

You have no choice but to take a sip of your... marmite water!

Some moms and dads really get into April Fools’ Day. It’s an opportunity for laughs, and a chance to show your kids what it is to be able to enjoy a laugh at your own expense, by allowing them to play pranks on you.

You may not choose to celebrate just one day- having a sense of humour is one of those important parts of family life, for parents and children. You may have to pretend to laugh at that same knock-knock joke you've heard a thousand times, or force yourself not to correct your older child when he fumbles the punchline of the "why did the chicken cross the road?" classic, but a great parent will encourage laughter wherever possible (and appropriate!)

You could make trick food (strawberry flavouring in the scrambled eggs), dress up in disguises or invent a competition for the strangest story or the funniest joke. As long as you don’t take it too far, so that teasing and tears creep in, you’ll probably have a day of fun memories to look back on.

Does your family have any traditional tricks for April Fools’ Day?
