In 2002, a US pastor was inspired to purchase numerous bibles which he then handed out to trick-or-treaters on 31 October, Halloween, according to JesusWeen.com.

Sweets or bibles?

The Christian church has often been at odds with those celebrating Halloween for its association with pagan traditions, ‘witchcraft’ and ‘satanism’. It’s still a big deal, especially for many Americans whose kids put on fancy-dress costumes and patrol their neighbourhoods looking for sweets.

Now Christian kids are being encouraged to hand out tracts, bibles and other Christian gifts at the same time as the trick-or-treaters hit the streets.

According to the JesusWeen website:

“Every year, the world and its system have a day set aside (October 31st) to celebrate ungodly images and evil characters while Christians all over the world participate, hide or just stay quiet on Halloween day. Being a day that is widely acceptable to solicit and knock on doors, God inspired us to encourage Christians to use this day as an opportunity to spread the gospel. The days of hiding are over and we choose to take a stand for Jesus.”

In SA, Halloween and trick-or-treating have recently gained popularity within some suburbs, although parents are often reluctant to allow their kids to roam the streets and risk becoming victims to criminal activities.
