Justin Bieber has been a busy young man on his Believe Tour around the world and on the 8th of May he'll be performing in Cape Town. Of course there will be crowds of children, some as young as 10 years old, and teenagers excited to see the popular singer perform, but parents beware! The Western Cape Education Department has stated that even though the concert, which will be held at the Cape Town Stadium, is on a Wednesday night, they expect pupils to be in school as normal on Thursday.
Paddy Attwell, WCED spokesman, said that the Education Department had no problem with kids attending the concerts but if any students chose to miss school, they would be dealt with internally based on the individual school's code of conduct.
The concert is set to begin at 19:30 but if Bieber's recent show in Dubai (where he was attacked on stage) is anything to go on, you may be in for a long wait. Dubai fans were reportedly distraught after having to wait over 2 hours in 30°C heat for the pop star to finally make an appearance at 10pm. After performing one song, Justin took a break for a wardrobe change. By that time many annoyed parents were getting their kids home as the concert was also being held on a school night.
Concerts for kids?
These concerts have raised an important question for parents - should young children and teens be attending mid-week concerts at all? A recent Lady Gaga concert, which went on well into the night, had children as young as 8 years old attending.
It's a personal decision that every parent makes but even if your child is a fan of a popular act gracing the city, is it wise for them to be up that late on a school night? Not to mention the massive crowds and late night public transport that is often used.
