A few tips and tricks to get you out the door a little quicker in the morning.
For some bizarre reason, kids have no problem getting up at the crack of dawn during the holidays, but when school time rolls around, you basically have to torture and threaten them to get up.
Because there is always so much to do - either essential household jobs or something regarding the kids' schooling or an urgent work task your boss needed yesterday or all of the above - often it feels like there are too few hours in the day.
Sometimes you wish you could pause time and this way, you might still be able to get six hours sleep (if you're really lucky).
Mornings don't have to be crazy. There might be the odd occasion where someone forgot about something, but generally, each morning can run smoothly.
Here are a few tips and tricks to improve your insane mornings:
1. Create a routine:
Depending on what type of person you are, having to get ready when you've just woken up isn't always ideal. You're still in zombie mode, the kids are still in zombie mode - it's a recipe for taking more time to get done.
Developing a routine for everyone works well, because sometimes running on autopilot gets things done a lot better.
Creating a checklist for your younger kids to "study" helps quite a bit, because they know exactly what needs to be done next.
2. Sharing is caring:
If your kids are old enough to help out with whatever needs to be done in the morning, then why not rope them in?
Share the load by making sure each person is responsible for a few things. One of the kids could take care of breakfasts, another could take care of putting all the lunch bags out, and so on.
Not only does it give you some time to breathe, it also teaches your kids valuable life lessons. It's a win-win situation.
3. Set clothes aside the night before:
Most of our kids wear uniforms to school which makes it easier for parents. Make sure you iron shirts, shorts, skirts, trousers, and all the rest the night before. It would be even better if you ironed everything over the weekend because it would be one less thing to worry about during the week.
The same applies for those kids who don't wear uniforms - let them choose what they want to wear and give it a quick pressing.
These points apply to you too, mom and dad.
4. Get a head-start on lunch:
Prepare and pack everyone's lunches the night before and label them accordingly. The person responsible for sorting the lunch out during the morning routine should take it out of the refrigerator so when it's time to hit the road, it's a case of "grab and go!"
If you have a coffee machine, prepare the machine the night before as well. This way, when you wake up the next morning, all you have to do is press the "on" button for your morning wake up remedy.
5. Get yourself sorted out first:
Do as the cabin crew say - sort yourself out first, then the kids.
Try your utmost to get up and get done before the kids add their copious amounts of chaos to the mix. It's a lot easier and a little less stressful - you won't have to juggle getting yourself ready along with supervising the kids.
Getting back into the swing of things can be trying, taxing and somewhat exasperating. Once you establish a routine and get the hang of things, life should become somewhat easier and hopefully a little bit more sane.
