There's no such thing as starting too early when it comes to your child's education.

And with so much time allowed to families during lockdown, it's a great time to give your little one an early start.

These worksheets have been specifically designed to provide your little one with an excellent foundation for learning in Grade 1.

Language skills

Learning a language is a difficult task, one that researchers say will never be matched in one's life again. Language development starts in the womb.

According to Frances Slabber of the South African Speech, Language and Hearing Association (SASLHA), all babies are born with the potential to communicate and learn a language. However, this process cannot flow without proper stimulation.

Number skills

The language of numbers and the understanding of mathematics is something you can explore with your child every day. Mathematics has many facets.

It includes the understanding of numbers and counting skills, as well as concepts like size, content, weight, quantities, patterns and the relationship between things. Number skills can be developed by playing fun games that have a mathematical concept.

Visual skills

Your child's vision is crucial for a successful school career as 80% of what she learns is via her sight. The experts say sight is not just about little eyes that can see clearly.

Sight is only one of the visual skills your child needs to be able to read, write and do sums.

To really give meaning to what she sees, your child has to do a number of things including recognising patterns and copying objects.

Fine motor skills

Good fine motor skills is an important developmental milestone for your little one as she prepares herself for "big" school.

The manner in which the small muscles in your hand, fingers, wrists, toes, eyes and even tongue work together to enable you to do important things like writing and eating, is known as fine motor skills.

At school, about 60 to 70% of your child's activities require the use of fine motor skills.
