How to survive load shedding during suicide hour
Three tips for helping get the kids organised in the evenings easier.
Suicide hour. That absolutely insane time of the day when you're trying to get the kids to do their homework, cook supper, feed and bath the kids and then get them to bed. It's a parent's busiest time of the day. And then the power goes out. Great!
Now Eskom has been pretty reliable with regard to schedules and letting us know in advance about it going off. And thanks to News24's Gridwatch Android App, you can even get notifications way ahead of time to plan your life. But being without power certainly does make this time of day far more stressful.
Here are three ways to make it a little easier for everyone.
1. Gas hot plate
If you're already got an electric stove then rushing out to replace it with a gas stove is an expensive choice. And aside from the health aspect, eating takeaway all the time can put a strain on your wallet. So investing in a small two plate gas stove is something that has saved our suppers countless times.
My mother got one of these as a gift and I was very skeptical about it. And a lot of our Facebook fans swear by it too. The Wonderbag's insulating properties allow food that has been brought to the boil to finish cooking while in the bag. So you could start your food before load shedding kicks in and let it finish off in time for supper. I suppose it's a great way to save on your electricity bill in general.
3. Candles and Emergency lights
With little kids it would be advisable to rather have an emergency light because candles are very attractive to tiny hands. But if you have slightly older kids who understand the dangers of fire then you can make bath time fun with candle light baths and an exciting bedtime too, just pretend you're camping. Or you could use it as an opportunity to teach your kids about different eras when electricity didn't exist.
