Fun-filled activities for writing readiness
Creative ideas to promote writing readiness in your little one.
You might think your little one is too young to write, but these activities are the perfect way to hone their pre-writing skills. You’ll both love these creative ideas!
Let your child open jars and bottles of different sizes. Make sure that the lids aren’t too tight keep a watchful eye so they don’t get hurt. This will improve their wrist stability, hand strength and bilateral coordination.
No matter your age, bubble wrap is a lot of fun! Show your little one how to pop the bubbles with their thumb and index finger (the pincer grip). They can also push down on the bubbles with their index finger when the sheet of bubble wrap is placed on a flat surface. Remember never to leave your child unsupervised while doing this activity because plastic wrapping could potentially be a choking hazard.
Playing with clay is the ideal way to improve bilateral coordination, fine motor skills, finger isolation, midline crossing and in-hand manipulation. Let your little one punch holes in the clay with their fingers, roll the clay into balls of various sizes, make clay ‘cookies’, stretch it out and break it into small pieces.
Let your child thread large beads, thick pieces of a straw or dry macaroni. This activity will improve their bilateral coordination, hand-eye coordination, in-hand manipulation and midline crossing. Remember to keep an eye on them as they might be tempted to put these items in their mouth and it could be a choking hazard.
It is a good idea to buy your child a pair of child-friendly scissors and showing them how to use it. They might struggle to cut out anything in the beginning, but they will soon get the hang of it and develop their bilateral and hand-eye coordination along the way. Just watch out for self-administered haircuts!
