Is your sports star perhaps dehydrated?

accreditation

It can be gruelling on the sports field – a half-hour or more of strenuous physical activity in the sun can take its toll on your child’s skin, energy and hydration levels, which may affect the healthy maintenance of the body’s organs.

Our bodies contain a large percentage of water and when we dehydrate, it disturbs the delicate balance of minerals that help your body to function properly.

But playing sports is such an important part of your child’s development: it’s excellent for cardio fitness, building muscles, and learning life skills such as being a team player and a good winner or loser.

So what can parents do to ensure their children’s young, growing bodies can handle the punch?

1.       Pack the sunscreen

Overexposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can cause, at best, wrinkles down the years, or at worst, sunstroke and even skin cancer. Ensure your child is fully protected with a waterproof, high SPF sunscreen before they leave home in the morning, and that they reapply before starting sports practice.

2.       Let them drink water

In the summer heat, we all need to drink more water and when your child is active, they should drink even more. But beware of the fizzy drink or overly sweet fruit juice: some of these contain preservatives, artificial colouring and as much as 9 teaspoons of sugar! Make it a family habit to always have a bottle of water ready.

3.       Replace lost electrolytes

Sweating doesn’t just cause loss of fluids, but vital electrolytes and minerals too – sweat tastes salty on the skin, because it contains a variety of body salts. These need to be replenished with an oral electrolyte formula such as Rehidrat.
