Teen aeroplane stowaway wanted to visit his mom in Africa
Teen survives against the odds in order to visit his mom, ends up on wrong continent.
A teenaged boy who stunned airport crew by emerging unscathed
after stowing away in the wheel well of a plane was reportedly attempting to visit his mom, according to CNN
. Having climbed into the plane in San Jose, California he survived sub-zero temperatures and oxygen deprivation before emerging an hour after the plane landed in Hawaii. He told a law enforcement person that he had wanted to get to Somalia to see his mother.
The 15-year-old boy is thought to have climbed into the wheel well of the plane a few hours before the plane took off. He may have climbed onto the plane without knowing the destination of the flight.Amazing survival
The flight lasting almost 5 hours would have ascended to around 11 000 metres. Experts suggest that he survived the freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen by entering a “hibernative” state. CNN reports that out of 105 wheel well stowaway attempts since 1947 only 25 people have survived, so the teen was battling odds of only 24 per cent survival.
He is being cared for at a hospital in Hawaii (although he has no serious injuries) and will be flown back to the mainland
The boy's family have not released a statement.
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) will not repatriate refugees or displaced people to conflict areas, which is a plausible reason that the boy has been unable to see his mother, although details of his background are few.
Children displaced by conflict in countries may be placed in with close relatives in other countries. How far would you go to visit your mom?
