My daughter's a lesbian?
This mom wonders if it's just a phase and how should she cope.

Girls liking girls
My 17 year old daughter has told me that she prefers girls to guys and that she is gay. Do I need to be concerned about this and does this happen often and why?

Our expert answers:

By 17 a teen has a good idea about her gender preferences. Unlike gay boys, girls seem to experiment with the same gender relationships and boys. her sexual preferences may not be fully settled yet as identity formation is still being achieved. The most important thing here is that you face your own prejudices about lesbianism. Focus on establishing an open honest and loving relationship with your daughter. Do things together and find stuff you have in common. It is distressing and presurrising for a teen to work out identity issues and knowing that you care, accept and love her is all important now. I suggest you seek some help from the gay counselling unit or at least call them to gain some more understanding.
