Make 67 minutes count

accreditation

For Good:

A variety of causes and "real-time needs" converge on this website. You are able to visit the website, search for a cause in your area and respond with what you would like to do. The scope is broad.

There are specific needs and causes displayed on their Mandela Day Campaign landing page, but there are over 200 active volunteering opportunities along with more than 750 good donation needs registered.

Yenzani Children's Home:

Based in Midrand, Gauteng, the Yenzani Children's Home is a place of safety and hope for children who have faced some type of violent trauma.

The children's home will be open on Mandela Day from 08h00 to 17h00. Those who wish to pledge an item from the wishlist or book an appointment should email the organisation.

Financial donations are welcome as well.

The Gift of Joy:

One of the aims of this non-profit organisation is to improve and uplift. In 2015 the organisation was able to feed over 8000 people, along with warming over 3000 children and homeless people.

This year, their goal is to provide the means for Reshomile Primary School in Diepsloot, Gauteng, to feed over 2000 children every day.

The primary school gives all students a meal for lunch at school. For some of these children, it is the only meal they receive throughout the day.

The school relies on food donations to provide lunch and the Gift of Joy would like to ensure the school consistently has fresh vegetables, thereby ensuring children receive a nutritious meal every day.

This Mandela Day, the organisation along with volunteers will help the school by preparing a part of land for a vegetable garden.

Other equipment required:

  • JoJo water tanks
  • Gardening equipment - pit forks, spades, rakes, wheelbarrows, garden hose pipes, etc.
  • Seeds, seedling trays and seedlings
  • Compost
  • Recycled 2 litre cold drink bottles
  • Experienced gardeners

Those who wish to contribute can do so in the form of a financial contribution, volunteer your time and skills, or donate any of the items required for the vegetable garden.

For more information contact Nicky Coleman, visit The Gift of Joy website, or follow the Facebook and Twitter pages.

Stop Hunger Now and Sun International:

The goal for 2016 is to pack and distribute 2 million nutritious meals locally and 10 million across the world to mark International Mandela Day.

The meal packing campaign, Follow the Sun, takes place between Wednesday, 13 July, and Wednesday, 20 July, at Sun City, GrandWest (Cape Town), The Boardwalk (Port Elizabeth), Carnival City (Johannesburg) and Sibaya (KwaZulu Natal).

Anyone who is interested in doing their part to fight hunger can visit the Stop Hunger Now website and complete the registration form.

Volunteers are able to assist in packing dried goods at one of the locations nationally.

Relate Bracelet organisations and Angel Projects partner with the V & A Waterfront:

Visitors to the Watershed at the Waterfront are able to take part in the Relate Bracelet's beading marathon from 09h00 onward. Volunteers will help produce beaded bracelets to be sold to the public to raise funds for various charitable causes. Beads for the bracelets will be supplied free of charge to participants.

For corporates who would like to team up to do their part, the Angel Project will be setting an "Amazing Race" type challenge.

Teams will spend 67 minutes shopping at the Victoria Wharf for various charities, such as Home of Hope, TEARS Animal Shelter, The Haven Night Shelter, Atlantic Hope and Nazareth House.

Each corporate team will be issued with a shopping list of goods a specific charity requires and the challenge is to buy as many items from the list as possible within 67 minutes. The difficulty of the challenge lies in the budget. Teams are restricted to a budget of R167 plus VAT.

Teams are not allowed to use their own money to add to the prescribed budget, but they are allowed to barter or ask for donations. The team who manages to purchase the most goods will be declared the winner.

Companies who wish to enter a team can visit the Angel Projects Shop for Good website.

Alternatively, teams can register on Mandela Day, Monday, 18 July, at the registration desk inside the Victoria Wharf shopping centre, should slots still be available.

There will be a total of six slots over the course of the day and each slot can accommodate 20 teams of three people.

Community Chest's Winter Readiness Campaign

Non-profit organisation, Community Chest, is running a campaign to raise funds to provide over 2000 pre-schoolers with rain coats and wellington boots. The aim is to curb high rates of absenteeism from school during winter.

Those who wish to donate can do so by depositing into the Community Chest FNB bank account.

Account number: 502 6097 4842
Branch code: 201 409
Reference: winterreadiness

People are also encouraged to drop off wellies and raincoats and warm winter clothing at the Community Chest offices, 82 Bree Street, Cape Town.

For more information, visit the Community Chest website, or follow them on Facebook and Twitter, using the "#WinterReadiness" and "#CCWinterKids" hashtags.

Choose to Care - Care Crib

The National Adoption Coalition of South Africa (NACSA) is launching the "Care Cribs" for moms in need this Mandela Day.

The Care Crib is a sturdy cardboard box which double as a sleeping crib for the first 6 to 8 months of a baby's life. The cribs will be filled with all the necessities a mother would need in the first few weeks after her baby is born.

They will be distributed by NACSA partners to mothers in need as part of the "Choose to Care" crisis pregnancy support programme. The Choose to Care campaign was launched in June 2015 and has helped over 1245 women experiencing a crisis pregnancy since then.

A number of individuals and organisations are volunteering 67 minutes of their time to assemble the Care Cribs.

If you would like to take part in the campaign or for more information, visit the website, email Tamara Dalhuijsen or call on 072 308 3522.

Menlyn Shopping Centre in Pretoria pulls out all the stops for Mandela Day:

The mall has arranged for three separate events in order to give more than just 67 minutes.

Seventy children from Love with Wings and Kids Care trusts will be decorating their own cupcakes at Checkers, with the help of the South African Air Force. They will also enjoy lunch at Arapaho Spur and visit The Fun Company for gaming. Kids will also receive a backpack filled with goodies to remember their outing.

The Mall has also partnered with Wollies Animal Shelter and Wuma Dog Food to help find homes for abandoned dogs from the shelter.

67 dogs will be up for adoption at Cavendish Court and all the necessary paperwork will provided to begin the adoption process. Coupled with the adoption is a free bag of dog food.

Customers are encouraged to donate dog food, blankets and toys to Wollies.

Many people rely on bicycles for transport. A branded gazebo sponsored by Menlyn Park and Bruce Reyneke Cycles will be set up at the intersection of Lynnwood Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive. Staff will be on site to help with repairs and hand out safety kits to the first 67 cyclists.

For those bicycles that just cannot be fixed, a few new bikes will be given away!

Customers can make their minutes count at Menlyn by interacting with the dogs, helping the kids make their cupcakes (11h00 to 12h00) or at the bicycle gazebo to help hand out safety kids.

Hospice Wits Big Box Drive at Killarney Mall:

Hospice Wits takes care of those facing "life-limiting illnesses". The Big Box Drive calls on everyone to get a donation bag, fill it with any loved, yet unwanted goods, and then return it to one of the charity shops where it will be collected by the hospice.

For those who wish to donate items a little too large to fit in the donation bag, make contact with the hospice and an arrangement will be made for it to be collected.

Other donations are also welcome.

For more information visit the Hospice Wits website or email info@hospicewits.co.za
