Pizza's (still) a vegetable?

Pizza and fries to remain on school menus as a vegetable option.

pizza is a vegetable

A bill has been passed in the US which secures a place on federally-funded school lunch menus for pizza and French fries, according to Reuters.

Changes to the proposed bill were dropped before it was passed, including dumping pizza’s status as a vegetable, and limiting how many fries would be served per week.

In 2010 a child nutrition law called for better nutrition in US schools, but it appears the frozen foods manufacturers have found loopholes.

More tomato with your pizza, kid?

The change would have required pizza to have at least a half-cup of tomato paste to qualify as a vegetable serving. Current rules, which likely will remain in place, require just two tablespoons of tomato paste.

One in three children in the US is obese, and South Africa is rapidly catching up. Junk food is often the default option for many kids whose parents are cooking less and less.
