A coach in the US recently lost his job after a pre-game locker room rant recorded on a cell phone was released. His angry “motivational” speech was laced with profanity.
The coach later said that he considered the locker room as having “sanctity”, and that what went on there would not be spoken about outside the locker room.
Obviously, a coach can’t get his team psyched up by playing whale song CDs, but what barriers shouldn’t he be crossing?
In recent years, there have been reported instances of hazing and bullying in the locker room, so his “don’t tell” policy is alarming.
There can be camaraderie without secrets, right?
A poll held afterwards showed that most people sided with the coach; despite his getting over-emotional, people were disgusted that one boy had exposed what went on behind closed doors.
How about you? Do you think the boy was right in exposing the over-the-top actions of his coach, even if it meant breaking an unwritten code?
