Pop icon Madonna’s 15-year-old daughter gets snapped while smoking- Is it a big deal?
Recent history has proven that if you are a child celebrity (or the child of one), you’re in for an unusual childhood. From Michael Jackson’s blanketed kids to Beyoncé’s trademarked baby, celeb kids have a rough ride. And much of that ride takes place in front of the cameras. Imagine being Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Leon: The 15-year-old has been seen smoking in public, and now she’s in the headlines, according to E! Online.
Many kids her age try smoking. That’s not unusual. Some children begin a lifelong relationship with nicotine in their early teens. Others manage to keep it social, or try it once or twice and then forget about it.
No big deal?
The point is, teens will try out all sorts of lifestyles, experiences and phases. Lourdes isn’t your average teen, but does that mean she should be some kind of role model? Will other teens actually try out smoking because she does? Perhaps, but we wonder if she should be blamed.
If you were a teenager whose life was minutely recorded by sometimes invasive cameras, there’s a chance that you’d be stressed out, too. It’s easy to see how she reached for the comfort a cigarette (temporarily) provides.
Naturally, even parents who do smoke don’t want their kids to pick up the habit, for reasons of health (and finances).
In New York State, it’s illegal to sell cigarettes to kids under the age of eighteen, but technically not illegal for a younger kid to smoke.
According to reports, Madonna says she’s going to keep an eye on her: She plays the piano beautifully. She’s an incredible singer,” Madonna said. “But she’s going through that ‘I-don’t-want-anyone-to-notice-me phase.’”
