A San Francisco Bay area mom has been arrested on suspicion of helping her child’s teenage friend buy alcohol, hours before the girl was killed in a drunken-driving crash, according to reports.

Surveillance footage from the market where the alcohol was bought shows 51-year-old Amelia Chin accompanying  17-year-old Margaret Qaqish to the market  and purchasing alcohol for the teen. Authorities are suggesting that the teen purchased the alcohol on her own, and have also arrested the store’s clerk, who sold the beer and wine cooler.

Qaqish died in the early hours the following morning in an alleged drunken driving accident, although she was not driving the vehicle in which she died. The driver of the car was arrested and is also believed to have been driving under the influence. This brings the arrest total to three in connection with the death of Qaqish.

The case indicates just how seriously authorities are willing to go in preventing underage drinkers from accessing alcohol and then driving.

In South Africa over the festive season over 1,200 people died on the roads, despite traffic authorities having a zero tolerance approach to drunken driving.

Do you think that adults who purchase alcohol for minors should face prosecution?
