A number of
young girls are startled by their first period. Most know that periods do
exist, but starting is still a stressful and emotional time for them and their
parents. How girls adapt to this new phase depends essentially on parental
support and guidance. When is the right time to talk to your daughter about the
changes in her body? What is the best approach?
“At Lil-Lets,
we are women, and dealing with issues around women’s monthly cycles is our
business. We are here to help. Our resident Lil-lets gynaecologist recommends
that parents start the conversation with their daughters as early as possible,”
says Darlene Smith, Marketing Director at Lil-lets.
“To prevent
unnecessary anxiety, young girls need to know what to expect. We have developed
a website, www.wearewomen.co.za, a
safe place for teens and parents to get information and ask a gynaecologist any
questions they might have.”
Starting conversations
It’s natural
for girls to worry about the changes they are going through and wonder if they
are normal, especially if they are the first or last one in their circle of
friends to start. They may be shy to talk about this, so parents need to take
the initiative. Lil-lets has put together a special Teen Starter Kit which
contains helpful information, and a range of products to give young girls the
option to choose what works best for them – tampons or pads. The Teen Range of
products has been specially designed to be shorter, narrower, thinner and
smaller to comfortably fit young bodies.
“Through the
Lil-lets School Initiative we are visiting 750 schools all over South Africa
and reaching at least 150 000 girls aged 10 and upwards. These young ladies
have a fun day during which they are taught what it means to have a period,
told about the changes they may expect in their bodies, and we give them advice
and guidance. We are women helping other young women,” Smith continues, “Most of all, they are given
proof of how amazing women are and encouraged to celebrate and respect being
female.”
The Lil-lets
Teen Range offers the most extensive range of period protection products for
young girls, from Teen Liners to a wide range of Teen Pads, as well as feminine
wipes – all especially designed for South African teenagers. In addition,
our website offers comprehensive guidance for teens and parents to make sure
everyone is as equipped and prepared as they could possibly be. Parents can
take a look at a specially-created guide which answers many of the questions
teens may ask.
