"Please pick that up?"
"No!"

It's a conversation I've had with my 5-year-old cousin, countless times. It's frustrating when someone half your size is defiant but sometimes there are better ways than screaming and shouting. We asked our Facebook followers how they got their kids to do things they didn't want to and here's what they had to say:

Beat them with a stick ;) (not really) - Joy-Anne

Bwaahahah Joy - I take away their favourite things.. - Sharlene

Reverse Psychology, make them think it was their choice. - Chantelle

As a parent you must also get involved ....... & give them incentives which believe me works wonders!!! - Renee

Make it a challenge! they know everything and can do everything .. - Nawaal

Negotiate....and explain the benefits of doing it. - Nishaat

Depending on how badly they don't want to do it, ask them nicely/negotiate/offer an incentive. - Sara

Bribery :) - Rebecca

Firm but gentle discipline. Explaining why you want it done and the benefits to them of doing it. Depending on the size of the task incentivise, but I am careful not to fall into that trap else it becomes mercenary and they are soooooo good at that :-) - Lisa

What do you think about these methods? And how do you get your kid to do the things they don't want to do?
