Parent24 : Toddler 1-2 : development behaviour : “My kid cut his own hair!”

“My kid cut his own hair!”

Cutting (not running) with scissors: A parent’s nightmare has a silver lining.

kid with huge pair of scissors

Most parents are, by necessity, cautious when it comes to allowing their child access to scissors. The admonishment “don’t run with scissors” is a great one to stick to. But there’s another danger with kids when it comes to scissors: What if they let their inner-barber or hairdresser out?

It normally coincides with the point in their lives that their baby hair has grown to the extent that it resembles a hairstyle.  Those beautiful curls that mom loves to pin up with clips or tie into picture-perfect ponytails. Or, on a boy, a carefree explosion of hair over the ears.

You disappear for a moment, and there’s your kid, with a newly punked-out hairdo and either a grin or a flood of tears.

It’s not always a bad thing, though; here’s a touching story I came across on Twitter.

@norwin: It's finally happened: JB cut his own hair.

@Squidsquirt: @norwin Rite of passage- perhaps be thankful he didn't shave his eyebrows off. Poor wee mite :)

@norwin: @Squidsquirt We're thrilled! A couple of years ago that was question whether he could actually ever hold scissors!

Instead of being shocked or upset, this special dad was overjoyed at  this normally shocking experience, and here’s why:

JB is a wonderful child: He was born with a rare congenital condition which affected the circulation of blood to his brain, putting his chances of survival at 0%. Amazingly, he has overcome many trials and surgeries, and survived. He has kept a blog since his birth, in which he talks about everything from his own medical challenges, to his loving parents. Why not give it a read?

Norwin calls himself a “blogger mentor to Jarrod”, and, rather than bemoan the haircut, he rejoiced in the developmental milestone of scissor-grip which JB had achieved as a celebration of life. Of course, he’s a little worried about JB’s fondness for the electric razor...

Even an impromptu haircut experience can have a silver lining!

Did your kids ever experiment with scissors on their own hair?
