In a recent US case quoted in the New York Times, Penelope Harris, a single mother of 2, was surprised when police searched her home only to discover about 10 grams of marijuana. She was later taken to court to be charged with the possession of illegal drugs, but prosecutors decided not to charge her.
Police later reported her arrest to child welfare and case workers arrived to take the kids away.
Marijuana is the most common illicit drug in New York that about 12% of kids age of 12 and older, use at least once a year, according to city health data.
Back home, Southern Africa is reported to be the world's leading producer of marijuana, notably Lesotho, where cannabis is the main cash crop.
