"Superheroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they arrive in onesies and ponytails," a sweet description a local NGO has given to one of its youngest donors.

Instead of gifts for her birthday, 8-year-old Rafi asked all her friends and family to donate essential items to the Grace Factory, an organisation assisting South African moms and their babies with much-needed baby items like blankets, clothing and toiletries.

"When a neighbour did a collection for the Grace Factory a month before her birthday, Rafi said she also wants to do a collection for them instead of getting birthday gifts," the young girl's mom, tells Parent24

"What started as a little collection in our entrance hall, soon became a collection that took over my entire lounge."

The proud mom says she was incredibly touched and "blown away" by the generosity of her family and friends, and so was her little girl.

"On her birthday when we sorted, counted and packed all the donations, Rafi said, 'I couldn't have wished for a better birthday'."

Starting something of a birthday tradition, the young girls says she's keen on carrying on collecting throughout lockdown and plans on making another birthday donation next year.

"I want to collect for the Grace Factory again because it was fun to give instead of just receiving presents. But next year I want to try to collect double the amount I collected this year," Rafi says.

According to the Grace Factory, Rafi's collection totals nearly 400 items, which will be assisting more than 100 moms and their newborns.

"We are so grateful to the everyday heroes just like Rafi who very generously help us reach moms and babies all over SA."
