Heart-shaped chocolates on the shelves, red roses at the entrance of every store and red and white decorations hanging from the ceiling – ah, the month of love. The kids have probably already asked you to help them make something for Valentine’s Day next week Wednesday. Are you going to have to brave the malls to buy overly priced chocolates for Valentine’s Day for school?

No, because we’ve got you sorted.

We’ve put together a step-by-step video to show you how the kids can make their own chocolates (under supervision) and we uploaded a few free printables for them to make their own cards. They can even incorporate their chocolates into our printable designs.

And the best part is, instead of being store bought, these Valentine’s Day gifts will be totally and completely made with one special ingredient: love.

WARNING: Don't let small kids handle hot pans or melted chocolate, rather help them with that stage.

Ingredients and tools:

  • Silicone heart-shaped mould
  • Chocolate
  • Popping candy
  • Gold foil
  • Parent24 printables (below)
  • Cardboard
  • Gluestick
  • Liquid glue

Tips and tricks:

  • You can play with different kinds of chocolate and other ingredients in your mixture. We used popping candy because, let’s be honest, kids love popping candy! But try sprinkles and white chocolate too. You can also play around with different colours of foil or simply use the silver kind you’ve already got in the grocery cupboard – sorted!
  • Making these chocolates on an extremely hot day isn’t the best idea. Make sure that once you take them out of the fridge you’re working in a cooler area on a cold surface. We put a plate in the freezer for a bit so when we popped the choccies out, we could do so on a cold plate.
  • Work quickly when wrapping your chocolates in the foil. The heat from your hands will melt them so again, work in a cooler area and make sure your hands aren’t too warm.
  • Be sure to stick your printables on a sturdier cardboard because the chocolate is pretty heavy on ordinary flimsy paper.
  • Remember, working a little too much and long with the chocolates in your hands will make it melt. Once you’ve stuck your hearts down, put your cards into the fridge so the chocolate gets hard once again.

And there you go: easy, inexpensive, and dare we say, adorable Valentine’s Day chocolates and cards!
