What arrangements can I make for my child’s grant money to be received by the person who will be looking after him?
The short answer
You need to inform SASSA that the child’s circumstances have changed.
The whole question
I'm currently receiving a grant for my child, but I will no longer be staying with him. What arrangements can I make so that my child’s grant money can be received by the person who will be looking after him?
The long answer
You would have to contact SASSA to inform them that the child’s circumstances have changed.
You would need to make an affidavit stating that as the biological parent you will no longer be staying with the child and give the name and ID number of the person who will be responsible for the child.
If it were possible for that person to accompany you to the SASSA office, it might get the application done quicker, as that person would need to apply for the grant in the same way as you did:
The person would need:
- An affidavit from you as the biological parent stating that the person is the primary caregiver who is staying with the child.
- ID document
- The child’s birth certificate which must have an ID number
- Salary slip, bank statements for three months, pension slips or any other proof of income. (Income must not be above R4 000 if the person is single or R8 000 if married)
- If unemployed, UIF card or discharge certificate from employer.
Payments stop if the person doesn’t claim for three months, and will also stop in the month the child turns 18.
The person can fill in the application form at any SASSA office, and this is SASSA’s toll free number: 0800 60 10 11.
