6 of Kourtney Kardashian’s parenting rules you might want to enforce in your own home

Kourtney Kardashian's got pretty strict rules for her family. But with closer inspection, they kind of make sense.

When it comes to the Kardashian clan, the media has made it a habit to comment on every single thing the famous family does, especially when it comes to parenting their kids. So whether it’s mommy-shaming Kylie for going to Coachella, weighing in on Kim’s no-make-up rule for North or rounding up every single Kardashian-Jenner name, people seem to be completely and utterly taken with the family.

But we rarely focus on the, albeit bizarre, positive parenting going on behind the scenes. Did you know Kim makes it a point to be “super present” when spending time with her kids, and that means not having her phone during story time? Or that Kourtney has made it a rule that the entire family take regular vacations together, with ex-partner Scott Disick tagging along?

Kourtney’s actually got quite a few parenting and house rules to ensure the family stays as strong, grounded and healthy as possible. And although some of them might seem rather bizarre, her explanations may have you considering them yourselves. I mean, don’t knock Ezekiel bread until you try it.

Here are 6 of Kourtney's parenting rules in her home:

1. Limited screen time works for her family

Handing your kid an iPad or your cellphone seems like a simple way to keep them entertained, but Kourtney limits her kids to 30 minutes of video-game time during the week and an hour on weekends.

Kourtney says, “They don’t really play with iPads at all. We used to let them use iPads at restaurants, but rules evolve as kids grow and we learned that didn’t always work for us. We want to be able to communicate and have conversations with the kids while eating together – so we try not to have TV or iPads out during breakfast, lunch or dinner.”

She added: “[We] never have iPads during this [reading] time (which the kids don’t even miss, since they love our reading routine).”

Admittedly, to some families this would seem rather strict, but Kourtney explains, “Every family is different, but these rules work for us!”

2. Glass and no plastic = winning

In a Snaptour of Kourtney’s pantry, Khloe revealed that her sister is a firm believer in using glass and absolutely no plastic.

The mom believes that toxins from plastic containers can be transferred to your food, so she tries to steer clear of using them.

3. Kourtney, what don’t you believe in? “Microwaves”

Khloe asked, in the very same tour of Kourtney’s pantry, “Kourtney, what don’t you believe in?”. The mother of three responded with one word: “Microwaves.”

On her app Kourtney explained exactly why microwaves are a no go: “When I had Mason, I did a lot of health-related research and decided to get rid of my microwave when I read that toxins from plastic containers can be transferred to food when reheated (this applied to BPA-free plastic containers too)."

She says that even though microwaves are quick and easy to use, they don’t heat food evenly and she’s also a little sceptical of what microwaving might do to the food's make-up: “I’ve head that microwave can leach nutrients from food and use radiation to heat food. I’m not sure how accurate this is but when it comes to my family I play it safe.”

So what does the mom use when it comes to preparing and heating food? Khloe explains on behalf of her sister, “She’s doesn’t believe in microwaves, but the toaster oven she says is solid.”

4. Diets, meal plans and all things organic

Kourtney has very specific dietary plans for the kids. She’s even tried a gluten- and dairy-free diet at one point, saying in an interview with E! Entertainment, “What you put in your body… is just as important as what you put on your skin.”

So in a recent post on her site with her full meal plan, Kourtney revealed that she tries to keep things organic: “In general, I try to eat healthy and include as many organic whole foods as possible.”

And it seems they’ve all sort of adapted.

5. She swears by Ezekiel bread

Admittedly, we too have never heard of Ezekiel bread, but it seems Kourtney swears by the bread that is made from whole grains. The grains have been allowed to germinate before being milled into flour, which loosely translates to it’s a health bomb, and therefore a staple in Kourtney’s pantry.

6. No fizzy drinks

Trying to keep things as healthy as possible, it makes sense that Kourtney would ban fizzy drinks as well then. Kourtney explains, “I always try to avoid sugar – especially refined sugar – for so many reasons.”

“First, sugar is addictive and I notice that after I eat it, I need it. Sugar doesn’t sustain you when you actually need energy…”
So she’s cut out one thing that she knows has tons of sugar: fizzy drinks.

“I don’t drink soda — ever!” she says. “I drink a ton of water during the day and I also drink a glass of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day (in the morning and at night).”

Kourtney has cut fizzy drinks out altogether, it seems, which means she doesn’t even allow it in the house. So Khloe revealed a funny story explaining just how strict Kourtney's house rules really are: “The other night I was craving a Diet Coke and I had to put the soda in a coffee cup. She was like, “Who’s drinking coffee so late?” I was just happy she couldn’t tell the difference.

“Give me a break, Kourt!”
