October is known as Infertility Awareness Month as well as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, which strikes a chord with more people than one would expect.

After all, the unfortunate reality is that approximately one in six couples in Africa are being affected by infertility, which equates to about 8 million people in Southern Africa alone; and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) also affects 8 – 13% of women.

So if it’s so common – along with other women’s health issues like Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding - HMB) and Dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain) – why are these topics still so rarely spoken about?

A South African company, 3Sixty Biomedicine, along with the help of passionate and brave female health experts - believes that the time has come to #BreakTheSilence on these issues and encourage people to normalise conversations around them so information and treatment options can be shared.

This month leading the charge to #BreakTheSilence is a radio personality and medical practitioner, Dr Sindi van Zyl, who is ready to answer everyone's burning questions on the topic of heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain and PCOS – which is a common cause for infertility.

"As someone who has been diagnosed with PCOS myself, I feel very strongly about supporting other women who may be suffering in silence and unaware that their regular discomfort can be treated."

"Through this campaign I want people to realise that these common health conditions are treatable and as women, we should proudly live a life free from the discomfort caused by heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual pain and PCOS!"

"It's high time we #BreakTheSilence and #StopTheStigma and I am excited about participating in Health 24's upcoming Guest Forum where people can ask their burning questions from Friday 30 October until Tuesday 3 November about these conditions for me to answer," said Dr Sindi.

This is not the first time that Dr Sindi has spoken up about women's health. She's been actively involved in the #BreakTheSilence campaign since August 2020, and she's thrilled to see some positive results coming from it already.

"It's been wonderful to be part of a movement like #BreakTheSilence that is helping people by sharing information about the symptoms they are experiencing and treatment options, as well as making them realise they are not alone."

"We've seen such a positive response from the past 3Sixty Biomedicine webinars hosted and we want to keep the momentum and conversations going," Dr Sindi said.

Pose all your questions to Dr Sindi van Zyl during the Expert Guest Forum on Health24's platform happening from the  30 october to 3 November 2020. All SA women and their partners are encouraged to join in the discussion and engage with Dr Sindi van Zyl just by clicking on this link: https://www.health24.com/Experts/Expert/Womensexpert.
